GCSE BUSINESS STUDIES
PROJECT 3

THE TOY SHOP

Following an extensive market survey John and Sally Evans have bought shop premises which they intend to use as a toy shop.  They are not too sure what to call this shop.

This assignment is concerned with this business:-

This includes the kind of communications connected with the opening and running of the business.

Advertising.

Market surveys.

This assignment is based mainly on individual students' work - you will be assessed on your own work and you should ensure that this work is your own and that you do not lend it to other people.

The following page has tasks which must be completed, however a good project will include substantially more detail than these outlined tasks.  Projects must include an introduction and a conclusion.  The *****ysis section should be substantial and well discussed.

The project is due in at the end of your last lesson in week commencing 22nd September 2008, exact date to follow.  At the start of September there will be an extra piece of work to complete, so time must be allowed for that too.  Although this is a long period of time you MUST plan your work to allow you to cover all the parts and to avoid a last-minute panic.  Try to plan when you want to have completed individual parts of this project by and then stick to that.  Try to complete the project early to allow yourself time to check it thoroughly.

TASKS WHICH MUST BE COMPLETED - YOU MAY EXPAND ON ALL OR ANY OF THESE.

TASK 1 - List and explain 10 ways in which John and Sally Evans could inform the public of the opening of their new shop.  Decide upon the 2 which you feel are most suitable for the Toy Shop, explain why.

TASK 2 - Design an advertising leaflet for the opening of the shop.  Discuss your leaflet, why have you included some details, why have you designed it in this way?

TASK 3 - Design a data capture form to be used to survey people in Canterbury or a large town to *****yse the toy market.  You should include age range of intended toy, price range, frequency of purchase etc.  Test this questionnaire on 2 or 3 people to check that it gives satisfactory answers, if some questions are not clear then re-write them.  Ask your questionnaire to a minimum of 25 people.  Display the answers in a table and also on a number of graphs.  You should then discuss the answers you have obtained and explain what they mean for the Toy Shop, e.g. the prices they should charge, the age range they should provide toys for etc.  Why did you ask those particular questions?  You may wish to transfer your answers to either a database or a spreadsheet program e.g. Access or Excel.

TASK 4 - Should a small shop carry out Market Research, is it useful?  Are there any problems associated with Market Research and the answers obtained?  Think about your questions and answers.

TASK 5 - Select 3 different toys or games and do a cost comparison in Canterbury between 3 different places to buy the toys.  Why do you think the price for the same item might be different between stores?

TASK 6 - List and explain some aspects that you think will be part of the Job Description for the manager of the Toy Shop.  What duties could be carried out by the Saturday Sales assistant?  Why could they do some duties and not others?  Try and explain fully.

TASK 7 - What are John and Sally's objectives in running this Toy Shop?  What outside factors will affect how successful the shop will be?
