The maths department are aware of the specific issues that children have with Maths and we have designed a curriculum that addresses those issues. The intent of the maths curriculum is to inspire and challenge students of all abilities and backgrounds and to prepare them for the next stage of maths education. We want our students to learn how maths is used everywhere in the outside world.
Prior knowledge is revisited regularly throughout the curriculum through starter activities, home learning and assessments in the classroom. End of topic tests and examinations all include a section of revisited work to assess the impact of re-visit activities and to identify gaps in students’ knowledge. These gaps are then addressed with individual students through a range of interventions. These include high-quality PIT tasks, small group/individual help and support, and online resources such as the Pixl Timestable app and Mathsgenie. Timestables are essential to many aspects of Maths and having a good grasp of this is essential. These are practised regularly in both key stages. We are embracing technology to help students learn Maths in a different way. As well as the Pixl Timestable app, we are a member of Mathswhizz, which caters to the individual learning needs and pace of learning for each student.
We also believe that parental engagement is vital in ensuring pupil progress. As a result, we regularly contact home to praise students who have made excellent progress in a particular area, as well as contacting parents/carers with information regarding work that students can do at home to fill gaps and improve their progress if they are not yet meeting or exceeding targets.
We have weekly after school revision sessions for Year 11, which focus on challenging topics and the topics that students traditionally do poorest on. We also run daily intervention sessions during worship time
Helping students to develop a growth mindset through teacher modelling, language, and feedback is another way that we help students to develop the attitude and skills for success.
