Geography
BackCurriculum Intent
The geography department aims to mould inquisitive students and equip them with the skills they need to ask and answer questions. Creating new opportunities (inside and outside the classroom), inspiring all students, and ultimately shaping students who are not just global citizens but are able to interpret their surroundings and world events. We hope to inspire and develop whole students and see the value in curriculum and teaching as well as form tutor roles, educational trips and extracurricular provisions that all go a long way in moulding our students. We do this through an engaging, challenging and broad curriculum.
Our curriculum deliver covers human and physical geography that:
- Is topical and relevant to our students lives today
- Equips all students to better understand the complex world they live in
- Inspires inquisitive students and equips them with the skills they need to find answers to big questions
PROGRAMME OF STUDY OVERVIEW
Curriculum Implementation
Our KS3 curriculum is centred around the KS3 national curriculum, laying foundations for development at GCSE whilst trying to blend human and physical topics. We use a range of resources from atlases to GIS software to support students as they develop key geographical skills. Fieldwork is seen as a crucial building block that aids understanding and brings learning to life, it is for this reason that each year group has opportunities to conduct fieldwork. It is during these experiences that students learn how to use specialised geographical equipment and develop skills that cant all be learnt in a classroom.
Curriculum Impact
Regular formative assessment is used by class teachers to check for understanding and to inform future teaching. Our curriculum is designed to include assessment of 4 broad areas, knowledge, understanding of geographical processes and phenomena, making informed geographical judgements and geographical skills. The skills needed to answer these questions are taught from the beginning of year 7 and are interwoven into all topics throughout key stage 3-5. Assessments are based on these 4 areas. All assessments are supported to ensure that all students can access the work and have the opportunity to showcase what they have learnt. Revision resources and support are widely available and shared with students by their class teacher.
